The coming of the railway introduced an early form of tourism to the West Linton area. Linton means ‘settlement by the water’, in this case the Lyne Water. The line was eventually closed for passenger service in the 1930s although much of the rail track was not lifted until the 1950s. The line parallels the road as far as Bogs Bank and then crosses where part of the old embankment is still visible on the left-hand side. Just before a cemetery the line curves northeast over the Lyne Water to the B7059 and the site of the former station, Broomlee.

The village of Clovenfords lies on the west side, just north of the hamlet of Caddonfoot. There is thus no problem in accessing the slopes of the hill and there is an abundance of paths and signposted trails scarcely hinted at in looking at the Ordnance Survey map 73 (Peebles, Galashiels & Selkirk). The Explorer map 338 shows more of these paths, but really no map is needed at all. In thick mist, descend in any direction and you will soon reach those perimeter roads. Meigle Hill is one of many so-called Marilyns: hills of any height with a drop on all sides of at least 150m.

Consequently, it is somewhat detached from the surrounding hills and that makes it a commanding viewpoint. I had another reason for wanting to go to Meigle Hill. The southeast slopes are traversed as part of the Southern Upland Way. Though I have been on various sections, I have yet to walk the whole length of the Way. Was this the opportunity to cover another small section? No, it was not, for the Mountain Hare was keen to show us that the Meigle Circular Walk stays on the north side of the Way.
